A 2011 Guggenheim Fellow, Kasumi is an internationally celebrated experimental filmmaker, VJ, musician, published author and producer.

Her films have screened worldwide: from Lincoln Center with The New York Philharmonic to collaborations with Grandmaster Flash and DJ Spooky. She was twice featured artist/performer at CAMP (International Festival for Visual Music) and at the Chroma Festival de Arte Audiovisual, Guadalajara, and her film, BREAKDOWN, which premiered at Carnegie Hall with the American Composers Orchestra, won the 2010 Vimeo Remix Award. While in Japan, her soundtrack performance of Oginsama, starring Toshiro Mifune, was nominated for an Academy award and she collaborated with the late Pat Morita in writing two film scripts.

Her film “The Free Speech Zone,” cited in The Encyclopedia of Underground Movies, was featured at the Forum des Images in Paris. Notable commissions also include films for composers Gyorgi Kurtag (Cleveland Chamber Festival), Igor Stravinsky (New York Philharmonic, Cleveland Institute of Music), and Esa-Pekka Salonen (Cleveland Orchestra).

In addition to being an experimental video and filmmaker, Kasumi is a musician specializing in Early Music who has performed twice at Carnegie Hall and who has recorded four LP albums; a theatrical production designer, and the published author of two books and scores of newspaper and magazine articles.

She has produced gifs and VR pieces for The Eric Andre Show and has recently created an art/music/text app called ShuffeHead. (shufflehead.com)

Her work has also been featured at Art Miami, Art Palm Beach, unpainted Media Art Fair, Munich, Museum of Contemporary Art, Krakow, Contemporary Museum Wroclaw, Itau Cultural Center, Sao Paulo, The Butler Institute of American Art, The Cleveland Museum of Art, MOCA, The Museum of Fine Art, Houston, Museu de Arte Moderna, Rio de Janeiro, San Diego Museum of Art, and many others. A selection of her Perpetual Series was installed in the historic grand opening of DC (Donau City) Tower 1 in Vienna’s Donaucity, Austria, and her work completed a tour of the major museums and art institutions of Poland. Selections of her work have been broadcast on France’s La Télédiversité #Numero23.
